Default Question about Quests that yield Skills

Hi everyone, my first post. Great board, great resource.

I'm new to the game, just made my first character, a Me/Mo, and my wife plays a R/E, we just hit level 10 and are having a blast. But I have a concern.

My wife's Ranger/Elementalist has been finding tons of quests that yield new Skills for her. My Mesmer/Monk, on the other hand, has found almost none. I bought all the skills available from Sir Bertram in Ascalon City, and I did a skill quest from Grazdan out in Old Ascalon, but that's it. I have a feeling I'm missing some other skill quest givers, even though I've searched and searched Old Ascalon forever looking for other skill quest npcs.

Is there a known number of skill quest givers for every profession in each of these zones, and I'm just not finding them? Or do they vary so that my wife just gets a lot more of them this way and I just have to buy them?

Can anyone help steer me to some locations where I can get other skills this way. I'd much rather quest for them than buy them.

Thanks

Just to make a broad statement here... this is your problem. You purchased all of the skills you're likely to get from quests. I didn't purchase any until I made level 20... and every quest I got in Ascalon City (post-searing, pre-searing) and beyond all yielded a skill and a weapon, shield, or some other tool.

So if you've jumped the gun, that's why. Also, depending on how far you've gotten... quests later on offer more skills, stances... and some even offer attribute points.

Loviatar, yes, I got all of those pre-searing skills, thanks! I guess that's why I was expecting to see more such quests in post-searing.

Gauwyn, ok, I'm a big boy and I can take your answer that I "jumped the gun". As a noob to this game I had no idea that purchasing skills from a skill vendor was going to eliminate my ability to quest for them. I don't see how a new player would know this without scouring the fansites in advance and, as much as I *did* do that, I still didn't know.

But your response also doesn't square with what I'm seeing in the game. Let me explain. My wife and I adventure together all the time, and have been since we started. We both did as many of the pre-searing quests as we could and hit the Academy at the same time and have adventured together exclusively since arriving here. We *both* bought all the skills available from Sir Bertram when we arrived. Yet, she has found many skills since that time from quest givers she's found out in Old Ascalon, and I have not. That's what prompted my question.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

Could also be that you purchased the low level skills for your profession and she purchased the higher level skills for hers. What this means is further down the road she'll be in your shoes... unable to pick up skills from quests, but you'll be bagging them left and right.

Buying skills is a waste of time and money in my opinion... with the quests giving them out, you're going to get them eventually. I only went back to buy one or two that I never picked up.

Also try this:

Looks like while you might pick up so many skills from this person (because of your profession), she wont with hers, and vice versa. Good luck!

one suggestion i might make is when you come to a skill trainer who has a bunch of skills figure that some or maybe most of them will be available from a quest at some place along the way

only buy a spell if you actually need it to make life a lot easier at the present stage of the game

i made the mistake of getting restore for my elemonk at the courthouse and it is worthless for me as i had to put resurrect back in the skillbar

i thought the rez with percent of health/energy was a very good thing but i paid no attention to the fact it is a touch ally spell

lots of good it does me with 5 charr within agro range of the body

with resurrect i am behind a boulder full casting range away and when the character rises it runs to me as fast as it can and we are out of there
